Well windows for killing is one thing, Microsoft are well known to be evil but mac for killing? Either way I don't care what the end use is if the US army take apple on i'll be put of buying Apple stuff. It's purely political!
So I guess you will just live off the land from now on to grow your own cotton for clothes vegetables for food? You will abandon all technology including the internet (originally a military project).

    http://www.darpa.mil/

As much as it pains me to say this, I agree with kdarling. Virtually every product you consume and every technology you use on a daily basis is also used by the US military and/or was originally invented for military use. Google maps was funded by the CIA when it was called Keyhole.

Have fun living off the grid.

This is all they have now

    MagSafe power port
    Gigabit Ethernet port
    Mini DisplayPort
Two USB 2.0 ports (up to 480 Mbps)
    Audio in/out
    Kensington lock slot

Audio in/out IS the "headset jack". You can plug in the iphone headset and the mac will recognize both the mic and headphones.

The u.s had the opportunity to thrive, especially after the cold war, but instead the country decided it would focus itself on wars, and therefore continue to spend more money than it could afford. This worked itself through the economy ( greed - irresponsible loans, derivatives ( which are a total con ) etc which lead to the banking crisis didn't help ), and now the u.s finds itself in the pits.

Hey, you had the potential but you decided to throw it all away...

I had this same issue, and decided that I didn't need to have the computers the same, since it was only certain files I'd really need the same. So I got dropbox (http://www.dropbox.com/) which has worked famously.

Had I needed more synced, I'd have gone with Chronosync (http://www.econtechnologies.com/pages/cs/chrono_overview.html), which has been reviewed pretty decently.

    I hope that helps!

I haven't read the whole article yet, but from the sounds of it, it seems as though a laptop can be charged without plugging in it. That is the processor that converts heart to electricity could either charge the battery or provide it's own power to the laptop. That would extend battery life, not sure by how much, but if it is a decent amount, this technology would be great for laptops.

Then again there's the heat issue. While the heat will provide electricity, your going to have to have a decent cooling system, which hopefully wouldn't suck to much power. Or maybe the converted power can be used only for the cooling system leaving the rest for the battery, thus conserving power anyways....just thinking aloud here though. :)

lol.... decent amount... nah... about a couple minutes.

I think Woz was trying to please the audience a little with that response as he was aware they are tech savy and knew he couldnt get away with praising it as a revolutionizing device. So i think his response was a good one.

Is that the same thin flexible OLED technology Sony was demonstrating at Consumer shows a year before (http://www.physorg.com/news174112703.html)?

The consumer market contains much more powerful development forces than defence procurement.

Waging wars in order to further technology is a very poor justification for killing lots of people and squandering billions in cash.

How do you know that that Sony prototype didn't come about as a result from work at UDC (funded by DARPA)?

Consumer forces made flight widespread. Military forces make flight feasible. Hitler's minions didn't invent the jet engine and solid booster to deliver packages and orbit weather sensors. Intercontental flight was made widespread after we decided to work on carring warheads across the ocean vs ppl. In 1940's who woulda funded a massive manhatten project to see if we can make it heat up some water...theoretically. The need for computer networks to survive a nuclear war now enable's us to read eachother's posts and take advantage of the consumerism on top of this web page.

Many technological advancements are so costly and far-fetched that no reasonable "business" would risk investing a lot of money in it. That's when paranoid governments pick up the tab. I don't think you understand that it's real easy to spend $499 on an iPod with tons of "Apps" on it and say...oh yah, this is like real easy to make because Chinese ppl take 50 cents worth of material and put it together. But before all this was possible, some of the smallest components in that iPhone and the most basic of all "Apps" took a "visionary" with a massivly risky budget to make one blink on some $5 million vaccuum box for the first time in history!

I had general anesthesia once, when I had my wisdom teeth out.

I passed out while they were putting in the IV - I was a little nervous, but I didn't feel too nervous until all the sudden I was on my back with the nurse calling my name. Then I was a bit embarrassed. (My mother is an RN in that very OR, so the doctor and staff were all hand picked by her, as a favor. She teased me about how I gave them all a fright by passing out, since they knew my mother would flip if anything untoward happened).

When they actually had me in the OR the doctor said, "OK, I'm going to give you the anesthesia now". I felt an ever so slight burning in my arm, and thought "Hmm, I wonder how long it will ta----". Out. Then I woke up in the recovery room. I was a little out of it, I certainly couldn't drive or anything.

I'm Catholic, but I imagine that if you don't believe in an afterlife dying is just like getting anaestesia; boom, you're out, that's it.

    O'RLY?

Somehow, I knew you would reply like you did. Again, I have a job in an actual data center as a systems administrator. Let me tell you, I know the real story. ;) And it's not just my company. Go take a look around and see how many shops use Windows to run their SAP environnements. Their peoplesoft stuff. Heck, just their lowly Oracle installations.

And who said I was talking about Enterprise Macs ? My Unix boxes cost well over 100k$ a piece.

Am I the only one that's happy about adapters?

I feel they give the maximum flexibility for the minimum port interference; I'd rather have 4 of these good-for-any-use ports on my computer than a set number of fixed use ports, some of which never get used.

    I guess it's just me?

    Sorry, you're not alone ;)

What a 'flexible' interface such as this does when coupled with adaptors is allow the basic mobile device to become smaller/thinner/etc. Overall, more desirable in its "mobile" modality.

Consider if the 1st generation iPad came with a row of legacy video ports: VGI, DVI ... and for good measure, let's include Composite & Component too, since IIRC adaptors currently exist for all of these. Even though each one of them adds "only a little bit" to the form factor of the iPad, the net result of just these is that the iPad is going to have a figurative "1.5 inch binder" now running down its side to provide the real estate. And its now going to be pushing 2lbs. Does this still sound like an awesome & compelling new mobile product? Probably not.

Now repeat the exercise and put just a DVI or VGI connector on a cellphone

The pragmatic reality is that the dongle adaptor can live at home, next to the non-mobile display that we would use with the mobile device. Since we don't have to carry it around for that use case, why should we care that it exists or how big it is? We shouldn't.

So the iPod Nano and Shuffle are failures in the same context?

No, I'm not talking about MP3 players I'm talking about phones. Nokia and Sony Ericsson, for example, is losing market share while Apple is gaining it from them.

A very sad video of Steve Jobs has been posted online. I already feel like an evil voyeur for viewing it, so I don't want to link to it...but I'm almost in tears.

I'm glad I read some reviews- I was about to try the contact syncing. In retrospect, that was stupid to even consider. I have a lot of value in my address book- info collected over many years. Why would I (1) send all that data to Facebook (do they keep it? do we know?) and (2) let said 3rd party app have run of the house, updating/deleting any and all of my contacts?

Like I say, I almost did it. But it would have been stupid. I *might* have been saved my MobileMe since I'm usually notified before it updates a given percentage of all my data. But still- a risk I don't want to take.

You fully, and completely misunderstand how the app works.
    Sorry for your ignorance.

FYI.. no contact info is added or deleted.

Only contact pictures are synced, and a link to the persons profile is added as a webpage link in your contacts.

    NOTHING is deleted
NOTHING is overwritten (unless you want to overwrite existing pics) - that's an option you chose.

the data is sent to facebook in order to "match" contacts by both name and email address.

What facebook does with the data... I assume nothing. you assume they share it. I suppose that topic is open for debate

Probably. I'm not buying Leopard since I'm going to pick up a shiny new iMac I think.

But since I've been planning on meeting up with another Mac pal for a while, Leopard night seems like a good one to do so... (we did the same on Tiger night) so I'll be at Regent St. :D

that's exactly what i was wondering about! i don't know if EU regulations apply to the ipad, but they certainly do apply to the iphone. and i think, apple has to include a miniUSB port (standardized charger) to the iphone 5 if they want to sell it here in europe. a simply dock connector just won't do.

Why the hell do you have to have a miniUSB for a phone in the EU?
what is wrong with just using a apple dock connector?? Apple is NEVER going to put a miniUSB port but they may make an adaptor for the idiots who want one (for what I ask)

i bet they had people there with MBA's from good schools running financial what if's and telling management to avoid digital because they will make less money due to not selling the film or anything other than the camera

Don't know who said it, but "if you don't cannibalise your products, someone else will". Which is exactly what happened to Kodak.

Greedy or not, if Apple and RIM are part of some patent infringement they have to pay up.

First, there is an "if" in that statement. Second, they wouldn't have to pay what Kodak demands, but actual damages. Third, Kodak has a market caps of $944 million, so if Apple and/or RIM thought there was any danger they have to pay $1bn, they would buy the company. Apparently they don't.
